If you’ve ever doubted yourself, you’re not alone. In fact, doubting yourself can be a form of self-protection—if you don’t think you’re good enough to do something, then why put yourself through it? The problem is that it becomes a decision between living in doubt or trying your best and failing. At that point, I would recommend going for it!
Why do we doubt ourselves?
It’s a common human experience to doubt yourself. We all have moments where we wonder if we’re doing the right thing or if we’re good enough to achieve our goals. This can be a good thing, as it helps us learn to be honest with ourselves and think critically about our actions.
However, when this doubt becomes persistent and pervasive, it can become harmful–both for your mental health and for your ability to succeed in life. If you find yourself constantly doubting your abilities or feeling like an impostor no matter how much success you’ve had (or even if you haven’t achieved anything), then there are steps that you can take today that will help alleviate those feelings of insecurity
You can learn to stop doubting yourself and be more confident!
1. Rely on your strengths
If you’re feeling doubtful, it’s easy to focus on what you don’t know or are not good at. But what if instead of dwelling on those weaknesses, you focused on the strengths that can help overcome them? For example:
- If you have trouble focusing and staying organized, use your creativity to create an organizational system that works for you (e.g., making a color-coded calendar).
- If people often tell you that they think what they say is stupid or boring, try asking them questions about themselves so they feel heard and valued (e.g., “What made this experience special for me?”).
2. Look to the future
Well, look to the future. The past is gone and you can’t change it. Don’t let yourself get caught up in what has already happened or what could have been done better. Focus on what’s coming next instead!
It’s easy to look at your accomplishments so far and feel proud of them, but it’s also important to remember that there are still many opportunities ahead of you. When we think about our goals and dreams for ourselves–whether they’re big or small–we should be excited about all that lies ahead of us rather than discouraged by our failures in the past.
3. Have a backup plan
A lot of the time, when you’re doubting yourself, it’s because you’ve been thinking about all the things that could go wrong. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the possible outcomes and think “I’m not good enough” or “this won’t work out.”
But if you have a backup plan ready in case things go south, then it becomes easier to stay confident in yourself and your abilities! For example:
- Have a back up plan for your original idea (e.g., if it fails)
- Have another idea ready so that if the first one fails, you’ll still have something else on hand (e.g., if my first pitch doesn’t work out as planned).
4. Keep a journal of your accomplishments
In a world where people are often quick to judge you and your abilities, it’s easy to forget all the things you’ve already accomplished. To keep from doubting yourself, take some time each week or month (or whenever) to write down everything that has gone well for you recently. This can include anything from getting an A on an exam or project at work to successfully completing a difficult task at home. Your list may be short at first but if you keep adding items over time, it will grow quickly–and once it does, refer back to it when doubt creeps into your mind!
After having written down these accomplishments in order of importance (for example: “I ran 3 miles today” would go above “I made dinner last night”), read through them whenever doubt starts creeping back into your mind as proof that even though things might not seem great right now–they really aren’t as bad as they seem either!
5. Find inspiration
Inspiration is all around you. Sometime we need a little push to break through.
What inspires you? What makes you feel good? A lot of us are inspired by external things, like going shopping , making money, or praise.
There is also intrinsic motivation. This comes from within inside of some kind of reward. Intrinsic motivation just make us feel good.
5. Be honest with yourself about your doubts
It’s normal to have doubts, and you shouldn’t feel bad about them. In fact, it can be helpful to be honest with yourself about your shortcomings and weaknesses. That way you can learn from them, accept them, and stop doubting yourself.
Doubts are not always negative; they can help you see things from different perspectives and make improvements in your life. For example, if someone asks for advice about something but their request seems vague or unclear, then it would be better for them if we told them what we think instead of pretending everything is fine just because we’re afraid of hurting their feelings by saying no trust me i know how this feels
6. Stop comparing yourself to others
You’ve probably heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: comparing yourself to others is a waste of time and energy. It’ll only make you feel bad about yourself, and that’s not something anyone needs in their life!
There are plenty of ways to stop comparing yourself to others, but one simple way is by focusing on your own goals and accomplishments instead. For example, if someone has a job that seems like an ideal career path for you–or even just something similar–instead of thinking “I wish I had their job” or “I could never do what they do,” refocus on how awesome it would be if YOU could land that type of position at some point in the future.
It may sound silly at first (and sometimes it will feel silly!), but making this shift toward thinking positively about YOUR accomplishments instead of feeling jealous over those belonging to other people can help ease self-doubt when dealing with any sort of personal challenge
7. Find your why
One of the best ways to stop doubting yourself is by finding your “why.” The why is what keeps you going when things get tough, and it’s what reminds you of all the good things that come from achieving your goal. It’s also a reminder that there’s no reason for self-doubt because the thing that matters most in life–your happiness–is on its way!
To find your why, ask yourself: “Why do I want to achieve this goal?” Then ask yourself again: “Why am I so attached to this goal?” Keep asking until you reach an answer deep within yourself; something that gives meaning and purpose beyond just getting there. For example: “I want to run a marathon because running around New York City will be fun with my friends,” or even better yet…
8. Don’t be so hard on yourself- learn from your failures
When you fail at something, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, try to learn from it and use that knowledge next time around. You may be disappointed in yourself but don’t let that stop you from trying again and again until you achieve success. Be kind to yourself as well! It’s easy for us humans to get down on ourselves when we make mistakes or don’t get something right away so remember: it’s okay if things don’t work out exactly how we want them too sometimes; there will always be another opportunity for success!
9. Limit negative self talk
Negative self-talk is a habit that can be broken and can help you stop doubting yourself. The more you say something, the more you believe it. If you have a tendency to doubt yourself, try changing your language and instead of saying “I’m not good enough” or “I’ll never succeed,” choose positive affirmations like “I am smart” or “I am capable.” You might also try replacing negative words like I don’t/can’t with stronger language like I refuse or I will not accept this as my truth.
The first step in breaking negative self-talk is recognizing when it happens–but sometimes this can be difficult because we’re so used to thinking negatively! For example: if someone compliments your outfit but then follows up their compliment with something like “but it looks much nicer on me,” take note of how that makes you feel inside even though there was no outward sign (like rolling eyes). This means that the person’s comment about themselves has affected how much confidence they have in themselves too!
10. You can overcome doubt
The important thing to remember is that you can learn to overcome your doubt. It might seem impossible right now, but it takes time.

The key is finding ways out of those negative thoughts so they don’t consume us or keep us from doing what we want in life
