New Year is the perfect time to start new habits. Everyone is coming up with new year resolutions, and it’s the perfect time to squeeze these habits it. Here is a list of 15 habits to start in 2020 that will change your life.
1. Drink more water. Drinking water has so many benefits. Not only will you cut back on sugary, unhealthy drinks when you start drinking more water, but you will gain all of the other positive effects as well. Some of the reasons you should start drinking more water are it can help you lose weight, reduce headaches, help your skin, just improve overall functioning.
2. Exercise more. The CDC recommends that “adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week.” They don’t just make these numbers up for fun. Exercise not only has a multitude of benefits for physical health, but mental health as well.
3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Everyone knows that it’s important to eat fruits and vegetables, but most people don’t eat enough. Eating fruits and veggies helps fight against diseases, provides you with the basic things you need, and boosts overall health.
5. Write in a bullet journal every day. It doesn’t have to be a bullet journal; it can just be a regular journal. Journaling allows you to reflect grow. If your goals are health-oriented, you can start a health and fitness bullet journal.
6. Update planner weekly (at least). I don’t know about you, but I get all excited about getting organized at the beginning of the year. After a few months, I completely forget about my planner, and I am an unorganized mess. Being consistent with your planner is a great way to get organized.
7. Do a self-care activity weekly. We don’t think of self-care as often, but it is just important to your health as exercise. We tend to get busy and forget to take care of ourselves, which can have a toll on our mental health. Remember to do at least one self-care activity a week. This could be taking a bath, journaling, spending time outside, or just doing something you love.
8. Create a schedule for cleaning. Having a clean home makes me more productive and just makes me feel good. It’s easy to get behind, but that is what a cleaning schedule is for.
9. Do something creative weekly. Being fit isn’t the only of the 15 habits to start in 2020. You should also try doing something creative more often. Doing something creative is not only for fun. 10. Cut back on wasted time. At the end of the day, I always wonder how time escaped me. I say that I didn’t exercise or do this or that because I didn’t have time. When looking back, I probably spent about 2-3 mind-numbing hours on my phone when I could have been doing something more fun or productive. This year, try to cut back on the time you feel that’s wasted. Create a habit of doing things that will benefit you instead.
11. Meditate consistently. It’s no secret that meditating is amazing. I meditate a couple of times, and then I don’t do it again for months. 12. Be positive. It’s okay to not always be so positive. In fact, you shouldn’t be. When possible, try to have a more positive outlook. I have realized that getting upset over every little thing just isn’t worth it, and I will be much happier if I try to be more positive.
13. Learn something weekly. This is a common habit of successful people. You shouldn’t every stop learning, so a new habit you should start is to earn something new. Knowledge is power, and it will make you more more confident. Whether it’s a new language, the human body, car maintenance, or literature, learning has something to offer everyone.
14. Get enough sleep. As a student, I know that myself and others rarely get enough sleep. Sleep is vital for good health. Start keeping track of how much sleep you’re getting. Even if I have a lot to do, I’m going to start a habit of going to sleep at a decent time.
15. Cut back on screen time. I spend way too much time looking at a screen, and I’m sure many of you do too. Studies have found that excessive phone use leads to anxiety, especially fear of missing out. Make it a habit to find something better to do besides turning to your phone for 2-3 hours a day.
