Self care usually gets pushed to the side.
Life is busy, and we put everyone else’s needs before our own.
I know so many people that feel like they don’t have time to put aside for themselves.
There’s always a never ending list of things to do.
But you know what needs to be added to that list of things to do?
Self care.
It’s time we start making self care a priority.
Before anything other little thing needs done like sweeping the floors, cleaning the bathroom, or going to work, we need to take time to do some self care.
If we don’t we’re just going to feel burnt out and exhausted.
Here are 9 powerful ways to make self care a priority in daily life.
9 Powerful Ways to Make Self Care a Priority
Start Practicing Mindfulness Daily
One simple way to incorporate self care into your day is to practice mindfulness daily.
Life is always go go go. Mindfulness is like stopping and smelling the flowers.
Start doing things with intention. Take deep breaths. Try meditating.
When thoughts come to you, and they will, notice it and then come back to the present.
Instead of always thinking about the past and future, take in the now.
Put Yourself First
It’s okay to say no.
We feel like bad people if we say no, but I promise you that it’s completely okay and normal to say no.
Did people quit at your job and now you’re expected to do all of your work plus theirs? Tell your boss you won’t do that.
Did your friend ask you for an errand but your plate is already full? Say no.
Start putting your health first. Your mental sanity comes first, and then you can work on your other stuff.
Last weekend I was trying to study, work, and work on my blog and it just got way too overwhelming.
I decided to slow down and stop because I was getting to the point where I couldn’t think straight and I was going crazy sitting on my computer after 10 hours.
Put yourself first and don’t be apologetic for that.
Listen to your Emotions
Our body tells us some of our needs through our emotions.
If I’ve been working for a long time or I’m busy, I get frustrated very easily.
That might be a sign that it’s time to take a break.
If you’re feeling angry or sad, you might need a time out to take a step back and reflect. This is one of the most powerful ways to prioritize self care.
Start a Journal
Speaking of emotions, journaling is a great way to practice self care for so many reasons.
If you’re feeling emotional, you can write it down and sometimes that will make it better.
If it doesn’t, journaling can help you find patterns and get to the root of why you’re feeling a certain way.
You can also use a gratitude journal to help with mindfulness and appreciating the small things in life.
Implement Healthier Habits
Self care starts on the inside. Start implementing healthier daily habits.
Here are some daily habits you should start to prioritize self care:
- Drink more water
- Exercise 30 minutes
- Do your skincare routine
- Make a schedule

Make Time for Yourself
When you plan out your day, set aside time for yourself.
I know there are other things to get done that you think are more important, but you can’t forget about taking care of yourself too.
If you want to prioritize self care, you have to learn to make time for yourself.
You could wake up a little bit earlier to meditate before you go to work.
You could add a couple of more steps to your night routine to relax you.
Instead of scrolling through social media, you could read a personal development book or just any book that you’re really into.
Cut out the Negative
This is probably the hardest one. For the sake of your mental health, cut out the negativity in your life.
Get rid of whatever it is that’s draining your energy.
Do a social media detox. A lot of what is on social media is negative, and that affects your mood whether you notice it or not.
Cut negative, toxic people out of your life. Whether they’re your friends or family, you don’t have to deal with them if they just zap the energy right out of you.
Also, stop with the negative self talk. The way you see the world is all about perception.
Negative self talk is self-limiting and makes the perception of yourself and the world negative as well.
You can change your thought patterns and you’ll start seeing yourself and the world through a whole new light.
Set Boundaries
You need to set personal boundaries for yourself, as well as boundaries for those around you.
Let people know if what they’re doing is not okay.
Like I said earlier, say no if you don’t want to do something.
Start putting your feelings first instead of putting everyone else’s needs before your own.
Make Self Care a Routine
Another powerful way to prioritize self care is to make it a routine.
Plan out what you’re going to do for yourself and when.
Start practicing self care every day. It doesn’t have to be some big 2 hour morning routine.
It could be a 5 minute meditation.
Whatever it is, stick to it.
Once you make it a routine, it’ll be easier to prioritize self care.

I hope you enjoyed the read, and I really hope that you start putting your mental health and needs first.
Remember that it’s okay to set boundaries, it’s okay to take a break, and it’s okay to cut the negativity out of your life.
