Have you been waiting and waiting trying to figure out if you should bite the bullet and start a blog?
That was me a little over a year ago. I knew if I wanted to do it, I was gonna do it right.
If I started a blog, I was going to actually own my website using a hosting plan like Bluehost and go full in with keeping it up.
I thought that was too big of a commitment as a college student who was also working. I wouldn’t have the time to put into it that I wanted.
Funny enough, the moment I decided to start a blog was when I was watching Jane the Virgin. If you don’t know, Jane is an author and struggled with writing throughout the show. Everyone in the show was pushing her to go for it, and that’s when I decided I needed to go for it too.
It has been over a year since I decided to take the plunge, and I’m so glad I did. In fact, I wish I would have kept going when I first started a blog in 2016.
With my little background story out of the way, here are 8 reasons to start a blog in 2021.

Reasons to Start a Blog in 2021
You love writing
One of the best reasons to start a blog is that you love writing. After all, that’s what blogging is all about. That’s the reason I started blogging. I started a blog as a hobby in 2016 because I love writing and I always have.
Like I talked about in my reasons to start a journal post, writing can be therapeutic. It’s not just writing in a journal that’s therapeutic. Writing blog posts helps too!
You love giving people valuable information
When you write blog posts, most of the time you’re giving people valuable information. People want to read about topics that are going to solve their problems.
If you’d love to solve people’s problems or help them out in some way, blogging is for you. One of the main ways to get blog traffic is just writing content that people value.

You can Make Money Blogging
This is most people’s favorite reason why you should start a blog. Yes, blogs make money. Some bloggers even make 6 figure months. How crazy is that? If you don’t believe me, you can check out these blog income reports.
- Cassie Scroggins broke $3,000/month
- Fit Mommy in Heels made $11,562 in one month
- Caroline Vencil made over $25,000 in one month
- Ell from Boss Girl Bloggers made $80,000
- It’s a Lovely Life made $2,233,236 in 2019
Improve your skills
This is a reason to start a blog that most people don’t think about, but blogging improves all kinds of skills.
I go back and look at my earlier blog posts and cringe because my writing has gotten so much better. I’ve gone from struggling to write 300 words to easily writing 1,000 words.
Another benefit of blogging is it improves your technical skills. Although I only know the basics, I’ve learned more about SEO and building websites.
To get your blog to reach people, you have to learn how to promote it. An amazing reason why you should start a blog is you can improve your marketing skills. Later on, this can even lead to you starting even more businesses and becoming a true entrepreneur.
Learn more
Along with building skills, you can learn so much by starting a blog. I always research the topics I talk about, and I’ve learned so much this way.
I’ve also learned more about myself. I’ve slowly started to find my own voice when writing and blogging has boosted my confidence.
Challenge yourself
Blogging allows you to challenge yourself. I struggle with social anxiety and blogging has really helped with that in terms of posting on social media. I used to be terrified to post, but it helps that no one on my blogging social media knows me personally. Over time, I’ve gotten a little more comfortable with promoting my blog.
Blogging also challenges you in other ways. It can be really hard and takes a lot of dedication to keep up. It can really prove how determined you are.
Build a community
The blogging community is amazing and so supportive. There are so many Facebook groups you can join where other bloggers support you and answer questions you might have. You can also build a community yourself of loyal blog readers. It’s really neat to have your very own community of people who you support and they support you back.
You’ll Never Know if you Don’t Try
The last of the 8 reasons to start a blog in 2021 is you won’t know if you don’t try. Like I said earlier, I really wish I would have taken blogging seriously early on.
I would rather try blogging and realize that I don’t want to do it anymore than to always be wondering should I start a blog.
How to Get Started Blogging
The first thing you need to do to start a blog is to buy hosting and pick a name.
If you want to take blogging seriously you need to buy hosting for several reasons that I’ll make a separate post about, but essentially if you want to be taken seriously, you need your own website.
I use Bluehost because it’s the cheapest and best for people who are starting their first blog.
After you buy hosting, you can design your website and start writing blog posts!
