I’ve made it a goal to stay on top of my self care routine for 2023. Nothing is more relaxing than taking a nice long shower at the end of the day (or in the morning if you prefer).
You might be thinking, how much actually goes into a shower routine. Don’t you just wash, rinse, and get out?
You can if you want a quick shower, but if you want to incorporate more TLC into your shower routine you can!
Before we get into it, let’s talk a little bit more about self care.
Why you Need to Practice Self Care
I didn’t realize why self care was so important until the last couple of years, but I still don’t practice it as often as I’d like.
Since the new year, I decided to set a goal to do more self care even more this year.
But why does self care even matter?”
It matters because it can help with stress, mood, and productivity.
It just makes you feel better.

Before your Shower
Before you actually get into the shower, there’s some things you can do first to make it even better.
If you have a towel warmer, you can use that or throw them in the dryer for a while.
You can also get a shower filter if you have hard water that is a part of the shower head. My parents got a water softener a few years ago, and I could tell a HUGE difference in how soft my hair was and how much better it lathered up.
A few hours before your shower, you can do a hair treatment. Here lately, I’ve really been into putting hair oil on my scalp and giving it a massage. It has definitely helped with my dry scalp.
If I’m feeling a more aesthetic shower, I’ll set up my star projector and put on some of my favorite music.
Choose a Temperature
The next thing to do is choosing a temperature. I like the water to be so hot that it burns and I can barely breath. You’ll probably never catch me taking a cold shower.
BUT there are benefits to taking a cold shower if you choose that routine. WebMD says that cold showers can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve circulation, lower stress levels, and reduce muscle soreness and fatigue.
Wash and Condition your Hair
Now to get to the actual aesthetic shower routine for 2023.
The first thing I like to do is shampoo and condition my hair so the conditioner can sit in it.
I usually like to switch it up between using a sulfate-free shampoo and regular shampoo so it’s not as harsh. I also like to switch between 2-3 different shampoos so I’m always using something different each time.
Exfoliate and Cleanse
While the conditioner sits in my hair, I like to exfoliate, shave, and wash my body.
My favorite exfoliator right now is this one by Tree Hut.
I always exfoliate before I shave because it makes that whole process easier.
Skincare Routine After your Shower
You can wash your face before, during, or after your shower, but I always like to do my skincare routine after. I like my water super hot, so it’s not very good for my face.
Here is my skincare routine for after my shower.
- Wash face with gentle foaming cleanser
- Apply retinoid if you want. I personally like to use it because it helps with sun damage, preventing wrinkles, and it just makes my skin look so much smoother. I use it 1-2 times a week. I use Differin, but you can also use brands like Cerave or The Ordinary.
- Apply moisturizer
- If I take a shower early in the day, I’ll apply sunscreen, but if it’s at night, I’ll wait until the morning to add sunscreen.
I also like to lather myself in lotion after my hot shower.
That’s it for my aesthetic shower routine for 2023! Here are some other ways to incorporate self care.
